Councillor Vacancies
As of May 2026, Westerleigh & Coalpit Heath Parish Council has ONE Councillor vacancy for the Coalpit Heath ward of the parish (to May 2027). Vacancies are to be filled by co-option i.e. not an election.

About the Parish Council…
Westerleigh & Coalpit Heath Parish Council represents the villages of Westerleigh and Coalpit Heath (including Blackberry Park), part of Western Yate, and the hamlets of Kendleshire, Henfield, Ram Hill, Mayshill, Nibley and Oakleigh Green.
Up to nine Parish Councillors represent the area, and on behalf of our communities we look after and improve:
- seven green spaces,
- two play areas,
- Bitterwell Fishing Lake,
- six emergency defibrillators and bleed kits,
- two war memorials,
- lots of litter bins and benches!
We also distribute significant grant funding to local organisations that benefit out communities
Councillors are supported by one part-time staff member – the Clerk (and Responsible Financial Officer) – who is responsible for the day-to-day management of the council’s assets, projects and finances.
The Council’s total operational budget for 2026/27 is just over £147,000. This includes a parish precept of £102,358, income of just under £19,000 and external community benefit funding of £26,529. Community Benefit funding is awarded, by councillors, to projects and organisations that benefit our residents.
Why become a Parish Councillor?
As a Parish Councillor you can help address local issues and make a real difference for residents:-
- Influence the allocation of thousands of ££’s of parish community benefit funds.
- Improve facilities for the public such as youth activities, play areas and Bitterwell Lake.
- Discuss & influence SGC plans for the area including building, traffic and parking measures, cycling provision, green spaces, footpaths.
What does the role involve?
You will be expected to:
- Attend at least 8 of 11 Full Council meetings held each year (no meeting in August). Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month at 7pm, alternating between different parish venues.
- Give around 5 hours per month to prepare for and attend the monthly meetings.
- Allocate time each week (from the 5 hours) to read email correspondence from the Clerk and respond where necessary.
The role is unpaid and non-political.
